Nano-technology will fight infection

Scientists at the University of Bath are working on a dressing that detects and then treats infection in wounds.  Bandages will change colour to indicate the presence of harmful bacteria and then release antibiotics from nanocapsules.

Funded by the European Commission, the project will take about 5 years to reach the stage of a prototype dressing.  The Bath team are working together with scientists from Australia and across Europe.

The revolutionary new bandages will be an important step in the treatment of burns, where infections can lead to life-threating toxic shock syndrome (TSS) and could also be used for treatment of ulcers, or in battlefield situations.
